Workshops, Sessions, Dances, and Performances

for Central Vermont 's Youth and Teen Fiddlers

 Collaboratively run by seven Montpelier area teachers and musicians with occasional guest artists:

 Sarah Blair---Traditional Irish Fiddle 

 Ruth Einstein---Blues and Jazz Fiddle, Mexican Fiddle

Sarah Hotchkiss---Old Time Fiddle and Banjo-- New England , American and Celtic styles 

Suzanne Long---Fiddling Cello and Backup Cello

Colin McCaffrey---Guitar, Bass Fiddle, Bluegrass and Swing Fiddle, Traditional Band Coach

 John Mowad---Fiddle, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Mandolin, Traditional Band coach---all styles specializing in Southern U.S. and Fr. Can.

 Jen Wells---Bass Fiddle ---all styles

  Four levels in groupings to encourage connections among peers*:

Early Beginning (“Spouts”):  Can play simple one string tunes such as cabbage and hot cross buns

 Beginning ("Saplings"): Plays simple tunes at moderate tempo.  One-octave scales in D, A. Two octaves in G. Can learn tunes by ear three to 6 notes at a time. (Classical equivalent:  Suzuki Book I)

 Intermediate(“Tree Tappers”):  Can play reels and jigs at moderate tempo between 80-100 per quarter note. Comfortable in keys of G, D, A, C, F, Bb.   Can learn tunes in loops of two bar phrases at a moderate pace.  (Classical equivalent:  Suzuki Book II & III).

 Advanced (“Sap Run”):  Can play reels and jigs at dance tempo between 105 - 120 per quarter note or faster.  Comfortable in keys with 3 or more sharps and flats, two or more octaves each.  Can learn by ear in 4 - 8 bar phrases that are being looped at a moderate pace.  (Classical equivalent:  Suzuki Book IV & V or higher)

 *Students will have the option to move around to find the most comfortable group.  These are just guidelines for how to get started.
